Tech Data Embraces Municipal Wireless

By joe

At first glance, Tech Data Corp. is pushing into the municipal wireless market just as everybody else is getting out. But take a closer look, folks, and you’ll discover that Tech Data is actually moving into a growing (though evolving) market — despite some negative press coverage about city WiFi networks. And it’s a market that craves more solutions providers.

First, some background about Tech Data’s strategy. The distributor has launched a Wireless Specialized Business Unit, which provides sales, technical and product management resources to resellers capitalizing on the demand for indoor and outdoor wireless networking solutions like hotspots for small businesses, corporate campuses, universities and municipalities.

“While many resellers are already very familiar with indoor wireless technologies, designing, deploying and supporting outdoor solutions requires additional technical expertise,” said Chuck Bartlett, Tech Data’s vice president, Networking Product Marketing, in a prepared statement. Tech Data’s Wireless SBU aims to fill this void.

Skeptics may note that big municipal broadband projects in Chicago, San Francisco and other major cities have been put on hold because EarthLink has largely abandoned its public broadband initiatives. But take a closer look and you’ll find dozens of successful municipal broadband deployments — with cities like Corpus Christi, Texas and Buffalo, Minn., leading the way.
